25 Nov 2008 Report on IFAHK CPD Seminar :
Corporate Crisis – From the view of Corporate Governance
Speaker : Dr. Ricky Szeto Wing Fu. Ph.D
Gammon Construction Ltd.
Venue : Joint Professional Centre (JPC), Central
IFAHK staged a CPD Seminar in the evening on the same day of the VTC Graduation Ceremony 2008 and the talk was delivered by Ricky W.F. Szeto, Executive of Hung Fook Tong Holdings.

Ricky is a young and energetic Executive Director of HUNG FOOK TONG, a reputable Chinese herbal beverages and medicated soups for family consumptions manufacturer. It is a typically traditional Chinese family run company by the second generation and not a public listed company. HUNG FOOK TONG is branded as a ‘caring company’ 2006-08 awarded by The Hong Kong Council of Social Services. The Seminar was well delivered in a systemically manner and in an experienced biographical way than a theoretical and academically way. It was hugely received by the audience because Corporate Governance is normally delivered by academia invariably based on theories and jargons.

Ricky’s Seminar was rather innovative and contemporary and used a lot of recent cases which attracted international attentions and affected societies globally such the Melamine saga in China, the Sub-prime Mortgages and Mini-Bonds businesses in the U.S.A. which involved losses suffered by major banks in countries all over the world, the collapse of the A.I.G. insurance group and the Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy, etc., etc. He presented some vivid explanations and quoted some fine examples. All in all, it was a good seminar and the audience enjoyed it. Credit must be given IFAHK in organising such valuable and worthwhile seminar for its members and other Supporting Organisations such as HKRFP, HKAPA and CMIHK.

20 Nov 2008 Report on IFAHK Congratulatory Dinner in honour of Kong Tze Wing James, JP
IFAHK Council staged a congratulatory dinner to honour James Kong Tze Wing being appointed as a Justice of the Peace (JP) in July 2008. James is the prevailing Honourable President of IFA Hong Kong. The dinner was held in Lei Yue Mun, a fishing village lying on the eastern side of Kowloon Peninsula facing the South China sea and a well known place for seafood connoisseurs. Ambient of the place was one of cosy and tranquil and the dinner was confined to IFAHK Council members only. The only guest was Dr. Andy Lam, JP, an ex-IFAHK Council Member and the prevailing Honourable Vice-President of IFA Hong Kong. There were ten IFAHK Council Members attended the dinner making a table of twelve persons altogether including IFAHK Council Chairman Tanny Yu who had just returned from a 15th Anniversary Dinner of a prominent Chinese accounting firm in Beijing. Being an informal dinner, there was no speech and the atmosphere was one of friendly and jovial.

The dishes were dominated by various kinds of seafood and the only two odd dishes were Choy Sum vegetable and Bean-curd with Papaya soup. Steamed king prawns as the started followed by sliced steamed Octopus placed on crashed ice wrapped in polythene sheet; then followed by stir fried Sea-slugs in bamboo seashell, steamed fresh Abalones and fanned Shellfish. A gigantic steamed Garoupa fish was served and dinners were amazed with its size and devoured it fervently. The last seafood dish was Crabs cooked in two different ways, steamed in egg-white and stirred fried in spring unions and gingers. Full satisfaction was detected on dinners faces and fried rice and noodles were served to wrapped up the seafood dinner and the after dinner dessert was mixed fresh fruits.

Dinners' homeward bound journey was filled with warm farewell conversations in between IFAHK Council members and the time was already gone 10:00 pm.

The Hong Kong Inter-tertiary Accountancy Association (HKITAA) warranted a brief introduction itself. It is a voluntary organisation formed by students mostly pursuing an accountancy Degree within seven local universities viz., the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Baptist University, the Hong Kong Shue Yan University, the Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, with supports from the universities concerned. The objective is to foster a bond between the accountancy students and the accountancy professional bodies.

HKITAA enjoys full support from the likes of HKICPA, ACCA, IFA, AIA and the big four global Accountancy Firms, etc. because of its formation nature. IFAHK Council will make an effort to cultivate this channel to promote the function of a Financial Accountant and the name of Institute of Financial Accountants because these students are backbones of future Financial Accountants. IFAHK delegated three council members to attend this meaningful event namely, Joseph Tsang, Johnson Law and KK Pun. They were placed on three separate tables talking to mostly students preaching the name of IFA and advantage of being a Financial Accountant.

The High Table Dinner was carried out in a solemn, simple and orderly way as below: -

Writer of this report is under the opinion that sustainability offers the opportunities for Financial Accountants to manage the finances, to manage risks, to manage the impacts of inflation, to manage the impacts due to credit crunch and financial tsunami. Following the successful CPD Seminar on ‘Mediation’ held in last June, IFAHK staged another CPD Seminar on Monday 29 September 2008 on topics involving financial reporting and ways of window dressing as titled above. Like the previous occasion, the seminar was supported again by the Chartered Management Institute Hong Kong Branch (CMIHK) and the Society of Registered Financial Planners (HKRFP) and the Hong Kong Accounting Professionals Association (HKAPA). Special thanks must be given to Dr. Edmund Lee, Chairman of CMIHK, for personally turning up to give support to IFAHK for the seminar. Being a chartered body, CMIHK enjoys high respect within the professional bodies in Hong Kong and IFAHK welcomes its link with CMIHK and hopes it will foster better co-operation between the two bodies.

The seminar by Nelson attracted full house attendance and he did not disappoint the audience by producing a lucid and well documented analysis to explain the current requirements imposed by the International Accounting Standard Board (ISAB) and the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) regulations. Mr Nelson Lam also cleverly illustrated by showing examples of how companies manipulating accounting principles in order to window dressing the companies accounts to the shareholders and the prospective investors. All in all, thanks and honours must be given to Mr Nelson Lam in providing such a lively talk to members of IFA as well as to the members of CMIHK, HKRFP and HKAPA. It is hoped that, as a member appointed by the Government of the HKSAR to sit on the Financial Reporting Review Panel, he will serve the Hong Kong accountancy sector well.

As a footnote, IFAHK will reciprocate as one of the supporting organisations in a CPD Seminar on Tuesday 21 October 2008 organised by CMIHK and the topic will be ‘Building for Sustainable Developments: 2008 and Beyond’. The speaker will be Mr Thomas Ho, Chief Executive of Gammon Construction Ltd., a leading construction services group in Hong Kong and operates extensively in Mainland China and South East Asia. All IFA members in Hong Kong in China, please give your full support to this event.

26 Sept 2008 WELCOME DINNER IN HONOR OF MRS BERYL
Mrs Beryl Shepherd, ex-Chairwoman of IFAUK and incumbent Council Member of both IFAUK & IFAHK, paid a visit to Hong Kong from 25 to 27 September 2008 inclusively. She was on a charitable mission to the Province of Hebei via Beijing, China. The IFAHK Council hosted a welcome dinner for her on Friday 26 September 2008 at the Yau Yat Chuen Club at Kowloon Tong, Kowloon.

Mrs Shepherd is no stranger to Hong Kong. She has been here twice before, once during her office as the Chairwoman of IFAUK and once during her holidays with her husband and her sister and brother-in-law. She was the first person to advocate that IFA courses should be delivered in China and Hong Kong included. Most of the IFAHK Council members who attended the dinner remember her well including the Honorable President and Vice President, James Kong JP and Andy Lam JP respectively.

There were only two IFAHK Council members who were there to greet her first time. The ambience of the dinner was one of happy, jovial and harmonious and Mrs Shepherd talked to the members about recent happenings at IFAUK and its activities in West and East Europe on IFA. The food, as always, was excellent and all IFA members including Mrs Shepherd journeyed home in a mood of satisfaction.

26 June 2008 SEMINAR
Topic : Mediation, an alternative to legal action for disputes
Conflict is unavoidable, how do you resolve conflicts?
Going to court is not the best way and settling by force is definitely not the solution: -

1. What is Mediation?
2. How it differs from litigation and arbitration?
3. Where to locate a Mediator?
4. How it can help in promoting and more harmonious workplace, home and society of you!
5. How can a financial accountant benefit from learning the skills of mediation?
Speaker : Ms SIU Wing Yee, Sylvia JP
JP, BSc, MBA, FCIArb.,FHKIArb.,LLM
Venue : The Joint Professional Centre
Unit 1, G/F., The Center, 99 Queen's Road Central
The Institute of Financial Accountants in Hong Kong has been very active lately. Following its participation in the Prize Presentation Ceremony for the Accounting Software Application Competition for Secondary School Students on Saturday, 21 June 2008, it organised a CPD Seminar talk entitled 'Mediation, An Alternative To Legal Action for Disputes' by Sylvia Siu WingYee, JP - a well known figure in the Law Society and an expert in formulating mediation skills, on Thursday, 26th June, 2008 at the JPC in Central.

The talk attracted other members of professional bodies such as the Chartered Management Institute UK, Hong Kong Branch, the Society of Financial Planners, HK and the Hong Kong Accounting Professional Association, etc.
Sylvia provided an inspiring and wonderful talk without any legal and professional jargons, and a lot of interactive actions. She even brought in at the beginning of the talk a sort of prop-show to illustrate the skill of mediation with the scene of the mediator having an initial dialogue with two opposite members of the dispute parties. It was so good that the audience thought they were actually enjoying a real stage play. All in all, the audience felt that the CPD Seminar by Sylvia has done the Institute of Financial Accountants some credit and there possibly will have an encore in a not too distance future!

However, there wasn't all play and there were some notable quotations.....

Chief Justice's point of view

'Mediation ... complimentary to that of litigation. Its promotion is plainly in the public interest. ... For the parties, ... reduction inciters, ... saving of time and costs ... for society, ... economic and social benefits ... alleviating conflict and achieving harmony. ... the parties ... own interest to attempt ... mediation.

The benefits ... increasingly recognised in Hong Kong. ... The promotion ...a matter of Government policy.

The Working Party ... pilot scheme in January 2008 ... building management cases in the Lands Tribunal. ... achieved considerable success ... in family disputes and ... construction disputes. ... legal aid funds should be available ... where the legally aided party wishes to attempt ... mediation... often more satisfactory for the parties than litigation ...

We have a long way to go before mediation reaches a state of maturity comparable to that in many common law jurisdictions. ... momentum is gathering pace'

The above are from the Chief Justice's speech at Ceremonial Opening of the Legal Year 2008 in Hong Kong.

The Institute of Financial Accountants was chosen to represent the accountancy sector in the hope that students can learn from our members the prospects of being trained as a Financial Accountant and the kind of jobs that a financial accountant will encounter in the real world.

Despite a damped and wet evening, the event was warmly received and the guests and students appeared to have an enchanting evening and lasted for about two and a half hours.

IFA Council strengthened by Members of ICAEW

At the Institute of Financial Accountants AGM, which took place Friday 11th May 2007, Eric Anstee, Professor David Hunt and Robin Liddell, were elected to Council.
'I am pleased that three members of the CCAB bodies were elected to the IFA Council', said Michael O'Brien, Chairman of IFA Council. 'It is vital for the IFA to have a strong council with a deep understanding of the accountancy & finance profession', he added.
Eric Anstee, former Chief Executive of the ICAEW commented: ' I am personally very committed to seeing the professional accountancy bodies working very closely together to provide a more coherent and integrated profession to prospective students, employers and the general public. The IFA, established in 1916, has a long history of playing an important role in providing qualifications and status to professionals serving the SME sector. To me it complements the work of the CCAB and I hope to be able to help the IFA with its plans both in the UK and internationally.'
Professor David Hunt, President of the IFA, The Principal of La Chasse Management Development Company, and ICAEW Council member, commented: 'As President and now member of IFA Council I look forward to adding value through my energy, commitment, strategic approach, knowledge of our profession and my international experience. All of that, I hope, will bring an exciting future to the IFA'.
Robin Liddell, Director RS Liddell Consulting Ltd and currently serving on the ICAEW Council commented: 'Basically, there is a range of qualifications within the accountancy profession; I believe the time has come for synergy within the qualifications structure and integration between the professional bodies'.
